Prototype Information:

In 1960 the DB decided to link up to an earlier luxury by building an exclusive and rather comfortable roster of cars for the "Rheingold" and the corresponding "Rheinpfeil". Since the new "Rheingold" could now be pulled in the German area from Basle to Duisburg with electric locomotives due to progressive electrification, new locomotives also had to be ordered. The DB thus decided on a modified version of the now proven E 10, which was to be given a streamlined body in the future. Starting in March of 1963 these swift locomotives, road numbers E 10 1265-1270, were available for the "Rheingold", which could do 160 km/h / 100 mph thanks to a gearing change and Henschel trucks adapted for the purpose. These locomotives naturally came in the elegant two-color "Rheingold" paint scheme of cobalt blue / beige. All production runs of the E 10 were also given the streamlined body with the characteristic "Pants Creases" on the ends used for the first time starting in 1963. The six Rheingold E 10.12 units were followed in 1963/64 by five more units, road numbers E 10 1308-1312, also in cobalt blue / beige. After the "Rheingold" and "Rheinpfeil" trains were changed into TEE trains, the DB changed the E 10.12 and their cars to the crimson / beige TEE paint scheme. A last series of the 160 km/h / 100 mph fast units were delivered in 1968 with the new road number classification 112 485-504, but with adapted regular production trucks, and again in the crimson / beige paint scheme. With the start of the summer schedule in 1968 all the locomotives were used from Frankfurt/Main in high quality passenger service, especially pulling TEE and F express trains. The delivery of the new regular production class 103 locomotives to Frankfurt/Main starting in 1970 gradually relegated the class 112 units to lesser services by 1972. The former stars now wandered to Dortmund, where they still hauled high-quality express trains. Yet, diverse uses in regional and freight service were now also on the program. Over the course of their service years, these units changed their paint scheme repeatedly and quite often also the road number classifications. Road numbers 114 485-504 thus came from road numbers 112 485-504 in 1988 and since 1991 they have carried the road numbers 110 485-504 after the dismantling of the series. The rest of the class 112 units became the class 113 in 1992. Starting in 2005 the last class 113 units went from DB Regio to DB Auto Train, where the last two former Rheingold/Rheinpfeil locomotives (road numbers 113 268 and 309) had to leave service on June 2, 20214. Both remained preserved, were sold to the TRI Train Rental, Inc., completely overhauled in the meantime, and restored to their original condition, however in the crimson/beige TEE paint scheme. In the future they are to haul among other things the AKE Rheingold tourism trains. In addition, road number 113 311 (former E 10 1311) is in the DB Museum in Koblenz and in Rottweil under the care of the association "The Pants Crease 110 488-4" is road number 110 488 (former 112 488).
